Fondly called ‘Masterji’, Saroj Khan was one of the most prominent and leading Indian dance choreographers in Hindi cinema. The three-time National Award winner she directed over 2000 songs in her long and storied career. Her most famous collaborations were with actors Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi.
Born in 1948, Saroj Khan started her career as a child artist at the age of 3. Graduating to a back-up dancer in the 1950s, she worked with choreographer B Sohanlal. She started working as a choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam (1974), but had to wait for years to receive acclaim. Her signature moves in Hawa Hawai song gave legendary actor Sridevi the moniker of Hawa Hawai girl. She choreographed some of the most popular Bollywood tracks such as Ek Do Teen featuring Madhuri Dixit from Tezaab, Dola Re Dola from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, Ye Ishq Haaye featuring Kareena Kapoor from the 2007 film Jab We Met among many others. She will be ever remembered for the signature moves in Hawa Hawai, Chandni, Tama Tamma, Ye Ishq Haaye, Ek Do Teen, Dola Re Dola and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga.
